Why are Pressure Groups so big in America? The trend of Growth of Pressure Groups in the United States has been exponential recently. This can be attributed to a number of factors. The massive increase is originally due to the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1974, which specified that donations to Congressmen must be limited, although it did nothing to curtail the frequency of donations. This led to the proliferation of Political Action Campaigns, or PAC's as they are known. Today there are over 5,000 PAC's which give a total of $250 million dollars a year. Only a modicum of Congressmen refuse to accept PAC money, so the influence of PAC's on congressional decisions is not to be underestimated. Naturally, the levels of funding in American politics, combined with the vast numbers of political appointees lead to lobbying.
