What is Unemployment, and how has it changed with the introduction of the jobseekers allowance AND/OR workfare schemes? Someone is said to be unemployed if he or she is looking for work, willing to work at the prevailing wage but unable to find a job. Unemployment refers to the condition of being unemployed, or to the number or proportion of the population who are unemployed. These are the definitions given in the Oxford English Dictionary to the terms, and so, should be the way in which these terms are interpreted. However there are many different ways of viewing unemployment in the modern capitalist society, especially with the way in which the government has handled unemployment throughout the past 400 years. The introduction of the JSA (Jobseekers Allowance) and Workfare schemes has also changed how unemployment is handled and looked at by this capitalist society.
