Sarah Hopler 4/30/07 U.S. History Jefferson and Bush Though 200 years separate the inaugurations of Thomas Jefferson and George W. Bush, the issues with which they dealt in their inaugural addresses have many similarities. When Jefferson was elected to the Presidency, the Federalist Party handed over power to the Democratic Republicans. Today, with Bush becoming President, the Republican Party gains power after a Democratic Presidency for the past eight years. In their inaugural addresses, both Jefferson and Bush stressed the need for national unity. Also, Thomas Jefferson and George W. Bush talked about the defense of the United States. Finally, both Bush and Jefferson discussed religion and values of the American people. The need for unity in the United States was stressed in both the inaugural addresses of Thomas Jefferson and George W. Bush. During Jefferson's time, there was heavy competition between his Democratic Republicans and the opposing Federalist Party. Despite differences...
