Marxist Stratification Wealth refers to the value of what a person owns. A capitalist is someone who owns the means of production. From a Marxist perspective, this would be the bourgeoisie. Outline a theory of stratification which might be implied by the above cartoon. The cartoon implies a Marxist theory of stratification, whereby the working class are exploited by the ruling class in what he argues is an unequal society. Marx suggests that in the current (fourth) epoch, society is made up of two classes. These are the proletariat and the bourgeoisie. These two classes have a conflict of interests, meaning that each aims towards a different thing. While the proletariat aim solely to survive, the bourgeoisie have surpassed the aim to survive, as this is not a worry to them. Instead, they aim to maximise profit.
