'The European Union's common foreign and security policy has been more rhetoric than reality' Introduction The treaty on the European Union stated that 'The Union shall define and implement a common foreign and security policy covering all areas of foreign and security policy'1 The European Union is an absolute and ineffable power of the Western world comprising of twenty-five member states and is home to four hundred million people. The CFSP was established under the Treaty of Europe, which was signed at Maastricht in 1992, (and was then further developed in the Treaty of Amsterdam in 1997) with the aim of protecting the interests of these member states. Five key principles are integral to the operation of the CFSP. These are to '(1) safeguard the common values, fundamental interests, independence and integrity of the Union in conformity with the principles of the United Nations charter, (2) To strengthen the security of the Union.......
