The process of European integration effectively started immediately after, or even perhaps during, World War II. As I see it, the background to the process of European integration is, above all, organising Europe in such a way that the great conflicts of this century, two world wars, do not recur in the future. European integration started with the establishment of the European Coal and Steel Community in the early fifties, intended above all to remove two of the major constituents of heavy military armament, energy and iron, from national or, if you will, nationalistic decision-making. It has now proceeded step by step to the Single Market programme and now to the introduction of the euro. The euro can be seen as the final piece in the Single
