THE HISTORY, DEVELOPMENT AND USE OF THE LIGHT & ELECTRON MICROSCOPE In the 16th century, the construction of a magnifier compiled of a single convex lens, which ultimately resulted in the development of the microscope. Although there were quite a few famous pioneers in the history of the microscope, such as Digges or Zcharias Janssen, it was really Antony van Leeuwenhoek who became the first man to make and use a microscope. He polished a small glass ball into a lens with a magnification of 270x and used this lens to make the world's first viable microscope. The disadvantage with Leeuwenhoek's microscope was that to increase the power of a single-lens microscope, the focal length had to be decreased. However, a reduction in focal length meant a diminution of the lens diameter, and so therefore after a certain point it became difficult to see through the lens. To resolve this intricacy, in the...
