Task 1 The History of Tennis Over the eight centuries before modern tennis was invented there was only one game called Tennis. As the modern game became more popular there were names to distinguish 'old tennis' from modern tennis. Real tennis was the name given to it in the UK, in USA they called modern tennis, Court tennis and Royal tennis in Australia. The game began in France during the 12th century where it was called "jes de paume" or game of the palm, played with your bare hands. But even then the game began to progress closer to the modern game we know today, as gloves were brought into use to protect the hand. Then by the 16th century up until the 18th century, rackets were being brought into use, all of different shapes and sizes. At around 1750 the most widely used shape of racket was one with a...
