Describe the different sports massage techniques that are used by sports massage therapists There are several massage techniques that sports massage therapists use, the main massage techniques are listed and explained below: Manipulation- - The term 'manipulation' comes from the Latin 'manipulare', what means to handle. It covers a range of techniques that use the hands to realign the skeleton, relax muscles and improve circulation. The most common forms of manipulation practised in complementary medicine are osteopathy and chiropractic. Effleurage- -Effleurage consists of long, flowing or gliding strokes, performed with open hands. In many massage sessions, effleurage is used as the initial type of stroking, as it has a calming effect when performed slowly. Effleurage is usually performed in the direction of the heart to promote circulation and lymphatic drainage. Petrissage- -Petrissage is one of the five basic strokes of a Swedish massage.
