Introduction The halo effect is the `tendency for one outstanding trait to unduly influence an overall impression`, for example if there is two seats on a bus, but one is next to an attractive person and the other is next to an unattractive person, you are more likely to sit next to the attractive person. Therefore whether the person is attractive or not is the outstanding/central trait which influences your decision. A consequence of the halo effect is the devil or horns effect in which the individuals judged to have a single undesirable trait (eg. unattractiveness) are subsequently judged to have many other poor traits. Which therefore allows a single weak point/trait to influence others perception of the person in general.
