... To what extent was the BBC in the 1920's the personal creation of John Reith? Elvira Gubayeva The British Broadcasting Company, formed on 18th October 1922, was established by the Royal Charter with a board of governors and a director general who was answerable to it. It was formed by a group of leading wireless manufacturers including Marconi. John Reith, a 33-year-old Scottish engineer, became the first general manager in 1922 and was the director general between 1927 and 1938. Daily broadcasting by the BBC began from Marconi's London studio on November 14. Over the following months the transmitter network spread across the UK. Wireless quickly caught on as a medium of mass communication. By 1925 the BBC could be heard throughout most of the UK. Reith did not share the commercial mission of the wireless manufacturers, who just wanted to sell radio sets, he believed this new medium to
