Observations 1. When adding the nitric acid and sulphuric acid mixture a drop at a time to the methyl benzoate solution. * As each drop was added a rapid temperature rise of a few degrees was seen meaning a highly exothermic reaction was taking place. There was also a colour change during the reaction from a clear colourless solution to a solution with a slight tint of yellow. 2. Pouring the reaction mixture over 40g of crushed ice and stirring. * The mixture goes cloudy and creamy/ pale yellow coloured solid particles form. 3. 1st suction filtration * The liquid is drained from the mixture leaving just the solid particles collected and clumped together. They are a pale yellow colour 4. Adding hot ethanol to the methylnitrobenzoate * As the solid is dissolved, the solution becomes a yellowy green colour. 5. Cooling the solution in an ice-bath * Thin white crystals are formed rapidly once the solution...
