Guestimate Is there a link between a person's ability to estimate the length of a line and their ability to estimate the size of an angle? To begin to investigate this initial hypothesis we did some preliminary testing. We took our year ten, top maths set and gave them a sheet with two angles, one acute and one obtuse, and two lines, one long and one short, to estimate the size. We gave everyone a minute and then collected the results. We took an average guess for each line and angle. Taking these enabled us to calculate the average percentage error for each angle and line. The results we found for our class were as follows: Item Average estimate Calculation Average percentage error Angle one (Acute) 58.3 o 3.3 / 55 x 100 6 Angle two (Obtuse) 152.9 o 2.1 / 55 x 100 1.4 Line one (Short) 3.98cm 0.28 / 3.7 x 100 7.6 Line two (Long) 14.3cm 1.8 / 12.5 x 100 14.4 Although these results do not tell us whether or not people over or under estimate...
