Semiotics The study of signs/of how meanings are encoded within signs. Communication using signs, from photo to film etc are all signs. Popular sign Symbol of defiance of British archer against French. Used to chop 'bow' fingers off. Now it's rude. 1st part of sign = The Signifier - The physical form the sign takes. All signs have a physical form or we wouldn't know it was there. Don't have to see it, sound/speech. 2nd part of sign = The Signified - The concept that the sign refers to. What it means/refers to. Just physical sign is useless/has no meaning. (Is never a physical object) (What it means to us) Signified + Signifier = Sign Signs:> Tastes> Text> Photo> Body Language> Expressions> Drawing> Smells> Sounds> Film/video> Gesticulations> Textures Any form of communication is a sign.
