When do native English Speaker use passive voice? The structure of passive voice is comprehensible for many students. It is also not difficult for them to rewrite the sentences from active voice to passive voice. Despite of this, they may find difficulties to judge when to use passive voice instead of active voice. Here I am going to explain the situation under which native speakers of English use passive voice. First, passive voice is commonly used to organize important points within an argument. In writing argument, writers may re-arrange a sentence from active voice to passive voice in order to change the subject located at the beginning of a sentence and thus the focus or the theme of the sentence is also changed. For example, in the clause, "the police caught the thief", which is presented in active voice, "police" is the subject of the sentence and the focus of the sentence...
