English Commentary - Record 12 Sophie Heithersay Yevgeny Zamyatin's novel "We" is a dystopian fiction that explores themes of freedom, beauty and the innate feelings of love. The novel is narrated by the character D-503 and is set 900 years into the future, in a utilitarian society called OneState. Essentially. D-503 is assisting in a space exploration mission and, as his task, is writing a series of journal entries for the inhabitants of the new planet explaining the various developments of OneState. The passage is taken from the ending of record 12 in which D-503 is analysing his new feelings of love and jealousy, of which he had experienced in prior records in his relationships 1-330, O and R-13.
