Shakespeare History of the Jury system in England The jury are the foot soldiers of the legal system, and are crucial to the legal process. Although there has been much disagreement over the real origin of juries, it is clear to most that it was established in England shortly after the Norman Conquest in 1066 A.D. It was used in France, when the Norman nobles had to settle a private dispute within their own domains. In every county a Jury was called, and had to take an oath so that they could truthfully determine the nature and the extent of population and land-holdings. This ended up in the creating of the Doomsday Book which is now thought of as the historical basis of property taxation in England. After...
