The battle of the Atlantic started in September 1939, this continued through the war and was happening whilst the other events in the war where gong on, including the "battle for Britain". In the battle of the Atlantic the Germans had realised that they could not compete with the British surface ships and introduced the U-Boats which where German submarines; these where used to attack the British main supply lines which ran through the Atlantic Ocean and where vital for the success of Britain.
