... Why Did Kaiser Wilhelm II dismiss Bismark in 1890 and what were the consequences? Wilhelm II was the eldest child of Crown Prince Frederick and Victoria. Chancellor Otto von Bismarck played an important role in shaping the character of Prince Wilhelm as a young man. The impressionable young Prince's parents were progressive, liberal thinkers and criticized their son's high impression of himself. His Grandfather and Bismarck, however, succeeded in nurturing Wilhelm toward Prussian military traditions. In 1888 Wilhelm's grandfather died. Crown Prince Frederick died shortly afterwards and, aged just 29, Wilhelm became Kaiser. Wilhelm II considered Bismarck too cautious and desired to exert Germany's power more forcefully on the world stage. In one of the many ironies of history, Wilhelm dismissed Bismarck in 1890, a few years after becoming Kaiser.
