GCSE History Coursework 2006 - Question 3: 'Explain the early success and ultimate failure of Operation Barbarossa to the end of 1941.' In June 1941, one of the final bastions to Hitler's military might was Russia, the space that he had declared 'Lebensraum' - an enormous living-space for the people of the new Reich. Hitler's armies had already proved their worth in Europe, and now almost the entire mainland of Europe was under Nazi rule. He turned his attentions to Russia next, and thought that the whole country would crumble with one powerful strike against it, as he believed that Stalin had corrupted the once-great country. He therefore devised Operation Barbarossa, named after the famous Crusading German general of the 12th century. However, he found that his plan would eventually fail after limited early success.
