Account for the 1903 Split of the RSDLP In 1903, during their Second Congress (which started in Brussels but ended in Tottenham Court Road as a result of police persecution in Belgium) the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP) split, leaving the party in two distinct halves, the Mensheviks and the Bolsheviks. The main reason for the split has been a source of much historical debate, but it is clear that the situation and growth of Marxism in Russia up to 1903, the gradual polarisation within the RSDLP before 1903 and the 1903 conference itself all had parts to play. There is also much disagreement over the role that Lenin himself played in the split.
