During this time Northerners and Southerners allowed themselves to hate each other enough to make war because of their different beliefs, lifestyles, and control issues. The American Civil War began because of the northerners and southerners had very different views on the constitution. The south had slavery and thought that it was the right way to live, while the north was slave free and wanted it to be like that in both the north and south. They both interpreted the constitution as a power struggle between both sides. The North did not want slavery to spread into their territory, so they tried to gain power by working against the South to get the new states that were created. This way if they succeeded they could enforce their lifestyles on
