Adam Peel Describe the role of Cavour in enabling Piedmont to Challenge the power of Austria after 1850 Cavour had realised through the revolutions of 1848 that the Austrian power was not as invincible as it had been thought. In unison with other Italian forces, Piedmont, through Charles Albert, led troops into a series of successful skirmishes against the Austrians, which had forced them back into their stronghold of the Quadrilateral. Here though, led by Josef Radetzky, they regrouped to defeat the uprising at Custoza, and Cavour realised that in order to defeat the Austrians he would need external aid and was not indeed the fabled 'Italia Fara Se'. At the same time, as well, Metternich had been removed from power as the Austrian foreign minister, creating a disunity in their foreign policy, this combined with a forthcoming economic crisis provided the base for the Austrian's loss of power and influence
