Between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, millions of men, women and children were brutally forced from their homes and villages and shifted onto ships, where they were taken from West Africa to America. Once in America, if they survived the journey: many died as an effect of the savage conditions. Slavery was more common in the Southern states.
