Have a little read: ... What Does Cassie Learn About Life In Mississippi In The 1930s? Mildred .D. Taylor's novel, 'Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry', is about Cassie, an innocent nine year old. The only problem facing Cassie is that she's black, and living in Mississippi in the 1930s. To truly comprehend Cassie's way of life, and how she learnt about life in Mississippi in the 1930s, we must consider black history. Between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, millions of men, women and children were brutally forced from their homes and villages and shifted onto ships, where they were taken from West Africa to America. Once in America, if they survived the journey: many died as an effect of the savage conditions. Slavery was more common in the Southern states. The black slaves got inhumanely treated with the men being sold on how strong they were and the younger women being treated as 'breeding stock'. The
