ASSIGNMENT TWO: Objective 2 and 3 The main reason why the southern states seceded was that they felt that slavery would be threatened when Lincoln was elected president, as he was a republican with anti-slavery views. If slavery was abolished it would have caused many economical problems, as the south had free labour in the slaves and if they were freed they would then have the added burden of paying their wages. Lincoln did not want to abolish slavery but simply restrict its expansion but the southerners feared that this would soon mean the abolishment of slavery. In a statement he made in August 1862, he said that he did not want to either 'save or destroy slavery'. This source shows that he did not believe that his restrictions on slavery were to blame for the war, but that it would have happened anyway due to sectional tensions. However,
