... By Sina Jafari 9C3 The purpose of this essay is to give a background of the rum rebellion and how the convicts overthrew Governor King, Hunter and Bligh. In 1792 Governor Phillip left for England and there was no Governor in Australia. Major Grose and the N.S.W corps ruled the colony until Governor King could arrive. Only fifty out of the marines stayed who had come to New South Wales with Governor Phillip. The rest returned to Britain, which then had to be replaced. The British Government ordered Major Grose to gather the New South Wales Corps, which was set up for the service in N.S.W. Major Grose recruited three hundred men, who sailed for N.S.W in 1789. They were housed in huts, mixed mainly with convicts and then they freed them. They saw an opportunity to build better lives for themselves. They became more interested in business and politics rather than the
