Have a little read: ... What were the consequences of the flight to Varennes? The flight to Varennes was a major event with the ongoing problems in France during this period. It was a catalyst to further problems for the king and the country. It had catastrophic consequences for the king. It all happened on the night of 20/21 June 1791, when Louis XV1, who had become increasingly unhappy with the way the revolution was heading, decided to leave Paris, where he was under house arrest, and flee to where he could have greater influence. He had decided not to go when Mirabeau had advised him to a year earlier but this time around he was under pressure from his sister and the queen. It can be seen that the intention of the king was to flee to Lorraine and re-organise and gather an army which would be capable of retaking control in Paris. It was
