Have a little read: ... How far do you agree that changing attitudes to Empire within Britain explain both the expansion and the dismantling of British Imperial power in Africa? International rivalry, rather than changing attitudes, can be massively attributed for the expansion within Africa between because of the fear that fellow European states expanding could dwarf Britain. Although some may argue that economic factors drew Britain into Africa and was the primary cause for the expansion, this places too much emphasis on the 'Men on the Spot' such as Cecil Rhodes, and City (London) Investors. Instead, the fear of rival European states' expansion more reasonably explains the British expansion in Africa. The reasons for this expansion are explained by the need to prevent Germany, France and Russia overtaking Britain as a power. With France intending to build a West African empire, Germany annexing states in South West Africa (such as Damaraland and Namaqualand) and Russia
