Unit 5: Caring for people with additional needs AO1 The following guide will help care workers care for service users with additional needs. Including understanding the causes of additional needs and the effects of additional needs on service users. Disabilities are usually considered in terms of three broad categories: physical disabilities, sensory disabilities and learning disabilities. The body's main motor functions are affected by physical disabilities, i.e. the use of large muscles of the arms and legs, head and neck and torso, and problems with some of the internal organs. A problem with primarily the ears and eyes is related to sensory disabilities. Problems with the ears range from mild hearing impairment to profound deafness, and similar problems with the eyes. Learning disabilities are those that affect the person's abilities to interpret what is seen and heard, or to link information from different parts of the brain.
