Structure and Function of the Respiratory System Introduction The Respiratory System is also known as the thorax, it is made of the respiratory tract and the lungs supply the body with oxygen, which is crucial in order for all the cells to release energy. Breathing allows air to circulate in, out and around the lungs, where oxygen passes into the blood and waste carbon dioxide is expelled. Diagram 1 - Simplified Diagram of the Respiratory System Nasal Cavity The nasal cavity is also known as the nose, which is connected to the back of the throat thus leading to the trachea. There is sticky mucus like membrane that lines the nasal cavity, this mucus traps foreign bodies and particles, within the cavity there are small hairs called cilia, these hairs along with the mucus trap the particles and move them to the nose to be sneezed out.
