The Advantages and Disadvantages of Treating Lung Cancer using Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) Lung cancer accounts for more deaths than any other malignancy in the industrialised countries of the world. The best prospect of a cure is by surgery for earlier stage disease. Unfortunately, a substantial large number of patients are unable to undergo surgery due to poor physical and mental condition. Radiation therapy may be given to these patients with curative intent; however, the prospects for a cure are drastically less than with surgery. Radiotherapy may also lead to significant pulmonary damage with loss of function and thus may not be suitable for these patients whose pulmonary function may already be severely compromised. For these reasons, there is a need for alternative, local treatments that can destroy tumour effectively but which are less invasive than surgery and less damaging to normal lung tissue than radiotherapy.
