Although it is widely used throughout the world, biotechnology is one of the more controversial braches of science. At the heart of the controversy lie different aspects, agriculture being undeniably one of them. For instance, the use of recombinant bovine somatotropin, more commonly referred to as rBST, to stimulate milk production in cows, has been the topic of many heated debates. To begin with, bovine somatotropin, the natural hormone that rBST wants to simulate, like any other hormone, is produced in small quantities and is an active agent in regulating metabolic processes of the cow.
