Outline the relationship between Stress and Physical Illness: Research has shown strong links between prolonged stress and many disorders, mentally and physically. Although cardiovascular disorders and a weakening of the immune system are the amongst the most well known effects of chronic stress, others include: stomach ulcers, post-traumatic stress disorder, eczema and other skin disorders, asthma, depression and even cancer. However this only covers physical illness as a direct result of stress. Stressed individuals are indirectly affected by stress because they are far more likely to smoke and drink, habits that will lead to physical illness. There are a number of suggestions that explain how stress may directly cause cardiovascular disorders. One such theory is that stress increases the heart rate, which may mean it wears away at the lining of blood vessels.
