Feb-03 Although exciting developments are being made with many types of stem cells that are extractable from adults, many scientists believe only the embryonic stem cells will offer the full range of benefits they seek. This is the current area of controversy which was addressed by a panel of experts on the subject. Any experimentation on human embryos requires a licence according to the present law. In order to qualify for a licence, it must be approved by a panel which includes non medical professionals. The law only allows work to be done on the morulla and blastocysts. All embryos used in research have to be destroyed by the time they are 14 days old.
