Section 1: Identify the cause(s) of Malaria (pathogen) The cause of the Malaria infection is by one-celled animals called Protozoans of the genus Plasmodium. (World Book Encyclopedia, 1976) There are 4 different types of the parasite which effect humans, these include; Plasmodium Falciparum, P. Malariae, P. Vivax, and P. Ovale. While the last 3 have harmful effects, (eg. residing in the liver for many years, and returning in some cases), Plasmodium Falciparum, is by far the most deadly of Malaria species.
