How Phenylketonuria is spread, contracted Phenylketonuria, commonly known as PKU is an autosomal genetic disease. This means that this disease affects the body and is inherited by both parents. The disease can only happen this way. If one person has the defective gene and his/her partner doesn't and they have a child then there is no chance that their offspring will be born with PKU. The disease is extremely severe and especially in infants. In most cases PKU kicks in shortly after the infant is born, but in rare cases concerning female patients the disease will sometimes only kick in during later life, normally during middle age. PKU only effects 1 in 16000 babies born in the UK and 1 in 10 000 in the USA. Economic Effects As PKU is a rare disease it is often very expensive to control.
