A: Describe what psychologists have found out about why people do not follow medical advice Psychologist Sarafino (1994) explored about how much people adhere. He said that most people 'customise' their treatment to fit in with their own lifestyles. If conforming will involve too much change to the patients' life, then they are much less likely to adhere fully. He found that people adhere 78% of the time to short term treatments and 54% for chronic conditions. The reasons for this could be that people with chronic conditions may be scared of admitting to their problem and try and ignore advice from doctors by thinking that the doctor is wrong and doesn't know what s/he is talking about. Other reasons Sarafino (1994) found were * The patient has reason to believe that the treatment is not helping * The side effects are unpleasant, worrying or reduce their quality of life. *...
