Weight Loss and Maintenance: Around 50% of the population can be classed as overweight or obese. Regular continued physical activity - combined with healthy eating - appears to be crucial in the effective management of long-term weight loss and maintenance. Diabetes: Physical activity helps prevent type II (non-insulin dependent) diabetes by increasing insulin sensitivity and improving tolerance of insulin. For those who have developed type 1diabetes, increased physical activity appears to be protective against heart disease. Cancers: Several large studies have noted reduced risk of cancer (by around 40% in cancer of the colon) among active people.
