ALCOHOL - IMPACT ON HEALTH Ethyl alcohol (ethanol) is the active ingredient in alcohol foods and beverage that is produced by the fermentation of sugars and grains. Ethanol is a chemical compound quite distinct from other alcohols that are used in laboratories, industries and homes, e.g. methyl alcohol (methanol) or wood alcohol and isopropyl or rubbing alcohol are both substantially more toxic than ethanol and should therefore never be ingested. It is well known that adolescents and young adults often "abuse" alcohol i.e. takes it excessively and hence start to misbehave. Excessive consumption of alcohol (ethanol) is a serious public health problem as alcohol usage is a factor in innumerable fatal accident ranging from motor vehicle accidents, drowning, suicides and homicides. Also, research has shown that alcohol-related problems often co-exist with various psychiatric illnesses as these people i.e with psychiatric illness tend to drink alcohol as a form of self-medication to relieve...
