... Brian Lockyer Field Trip - Report 16/03/09 Hout Bay Beach 1) The outcrops of Cape Granite are light coloured due to the presence of feldspar. The texture is inequigranular and consists of two different types of feldspar as well as quartz. There are other minerals present in the granite including biotite, amphibole and muscovite, all these minerals occur in much smaller amounts when compared to the amounts of feldspar and quartz. The feldspar grains are 2cm-5cm in length and their colour varies depending on the type of feldspar; there are two types of feldspar that are present in cape granite, these are Plagioclase feldspar and alkali feldspar. Plagioclase feldspar is the most common of the feldspar minerals and it is a large grained, translucent mineral that makes up a large bulk of the mineral content of the earth's crust. Alkali feldspar consists of the alkali metal elements of potassium and sodium. They
