"The fact is, this essay is totally inaccurate, biased, and unfair. I know this because although I was born in the UK, my ethnic origin is Turkish Cypriot, and to me this essay is just comic as I was laughing all the way through because the person who wrote this essay clearly knows nothing of what has been happening in Cyprus for the past 50 years....way before 1974. The first paragraph of the essay I have no probelm with. My problem starts after this. The is no mention of the fact that the people aren't just "Cypriots"- there are actually two peoples: Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The writer mentions "the illegal invasion of Cyprus by Turkey". OK, so it's true that the invasion was OFFICIALLY illegal, but in HUMAN terms, it was legal. The writer doesnt mention any reasons why Turkey invaded, like the persecution of Turkish Cypriots, the evil Greek Priest Makarios, ENOSIS (this is the ideal that Cyprus should be joined to "mother Greece"), or the terrorist group EORKA. All these scandals were happening under the old united Cyprus. I actually have a photo at home of Makarios blessing an EORKA grenade, and others of Turkish Mosques being destroyed, and of mothers demonstrating with their children against the blokade of food. The Greeks clearly had no regard of the Turks or their rights, which they were entitled to since they held 30% of the united Cypriot Parliament seats. The person who wrote this bull was clearly on the Greek south side, which is why he only has one viewpoint- the word "Greek" is not even in the essay, and he/she says that the person he interviewed is Cypriot, not Greek Cypriot, and this is out of order. The writer talks of this man whos just lost his land- what about the Turkish Cypriots who lost their land and now have roads built on it? The writer states that "Cyprus is the only country in Europe to be occupied by a foreign country". The writer doesnt seem to have one single clue that the north of Cyprus is now titled as the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cypus" (or KKTC in Turkish). North Cyprus now has it's own Turkish Cypriot Parliament which it democratically elects, with the pleasure of the people of north Cyprus. This is why I started going hysterical when I read the writer's stupid quote "most of the tourists visiting the country each year do not know this and have a nice holiday, completely oblivious to the fact that they are near the Green Line which separates the occupied from the free". What a joker! This essay is a pretty bad joke though. "
