... Hawaiians, Haoles and Locals Surrounded by vast miles of water, Hawaii is made up of eight major islands, located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. One can say that Hawaii is pretty much in isolation. It is about five and a half hours by air to California, and ten hours to Tokyo, Japan. (Manicas, p vii) The first people to arrive in Hawaii were the Hawaiians or the Kanaka Maoli, as they like to call themselves. Upon their arrival to Hawaii they brought taro, coconut, chickens, pigs, and sweet potato, in which they used to create one of the first "affluent Societies".(Manicas, p vii) The Kanaka Maoli lived off the Aina (land), they helped each other out and lived in perfect harmony, which caused them to flourish . Hawaii basically stayed in isolation until Captain Cook arrived in the islands. Hawaii slowly went from a subsistence economy to capitalism.
