They don't understand the pains of the elderly," Lillian Sullivan, a retired bookkeeper from Oregon, said about her doctors. Lillian is diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease, or ALS. This disease damages motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, making it difficult to hold a glass of water, walk, or even breathe. It is a terminal illness and it only gets worse as you get older; there is no cure. Many people with terminal illnesses, like Sullivan, have looked into assisted suicide. They have hoped for a painless death to there agonizing lives, but have been denied again and again. The specific intent of this paper is to show the humane side of assisted suicide.
