Recent Reviews of General Studies Essays

What our users think of the General Studies essays in this section:

"Generally good. This essay presents a well-balanced picture of the debate, making good arguments on either side and reaching a clear conclusion, with a convincing justification. In terms of presentation, the structure of the essay is a strong positive feature, with effective use of paragraphs (neither too long nor too short) and a good 'flow' to the writing. Unfortunately, there are a number of (mostly minor) spelling mistakes that suggest a lack of understanding by the user (e.g., using 'aloud' in place of 'allowed'), which do rather detract from the reader's impression of the essay as a whole. "I don't understand why there are two wildly different topics here - the WWF and cannabis. Regardless of this, the entirety of this essay appears to consists of extracts from websites, without even any substantial element of reworking. As such, this is a very poor piece of work, with the student having put almost no effort into it. What I would expect to see is evidence of the author reading the various information sources on the relevant topics, then rewriting this in their own words while capturing what they consider to be the important details. "Some good points here, but I feel that the essay is excessively affected by the author's admitted bias. A number of points are made with minimal justification, instead being simple assertions - this is evident from the fact that many of the paragraphs consist of single sentences. Considerable improvements could be gained from making the essay more balanced and from a deeper consideration of the reasons why the stated points are valid. I also feel that structurally the essay is weak in places - while it's good that the paragraphs do not become excessively long, this has gone to the opposite extreme and many are very short. This creates a rather haphazard structure as the various arguments don't really flow well into the overall structure. The final paragraph is a good example of a similar effect, with a large number of *very* short sentences. TSR User: Illusionary"

"The essay makes some good points on either side of the argument, bit it's disappointing to see that the author comes to no ultimate conclusion, instead 'sitting on the fence' by ending with "decide for yourselves". At times, I feel that the author is showing some signs of bias in their wording, but this isn't sustained throughout which if anything is somewhat confusing. Structurally and grammatically, the essay is quite strong, but still makes some minor errors, and comes across as a little too 'chatty' for an essay at times. However, the main filing remains the lack of a final conclusion. TSR User: Illusionary"

"An excellent and wide-ranging discussion of various aspects of racist. The author has an admirably clear and lucid writing style that draws in the reader and encourages them to continue reading. The structure of the essay is excellent - paragraphs are an ideal length and headings are used effectively to break up the test into manageable sections. The actual content of the essay examines the subject in significant detail, making intelligent points, picking out what is most important to emphasise from what is a very large subject area.
