"well structured essay, very useful."

"As I am familiar with the novel, I took a particular interest in this essay. The writer clearly has a thorough understanding of the text, being able to choose appropriate passages to highlight their points. The writer picks up on the seemingly contradictory views of women in the novel, in both their views of themselves and in how others view them. Stephen tries to maintain an act of indifference, in places mistrust, towards most of the women he comes into contact with. Despite his outward appearances, he retains a curiousity towards them which becomes insatiable. This interest feeds into Frayn's portrayal of women as apparently powerful figures, despite their physical weaknesses in an age when patriarchs dominated the home life. The writer shows awareness of the myriad of contradictions surrounding Stephen and his views towards the females in the novel with the references to the lamorna bush and its hold over Stephen's senses.
