Tension in the book varies a great deal. In shooting of Candy's dog the tension builds up greatly, then there is a release of the tension and then it builds up, then it stays at a constant level. I am going to focus on the shooting of Candy's dog. In the story, John Steinbeck uses six main phases of the dramatic incidents. The first phase is the idea of the shooting introduced by Carlson.
