... What Method does Steinbeck use you Create and Sustain Tension The purpose of tension is to make the reader wont to carry on reading and to not put it down. Tension in the book varies a great deal. In shooting of Candy's dog the tension builds up greatly, then there is a release of the tension and then it builds up, then it stays at a constant level. I am going to focus on the shooting of Candy's dog. In the story, John Steinbeck uses six main phases of the dramatic incidents. The first phase is the idea of the shooting introduced by Carlson. But Candy shrugs it off and still has hope. The second is when Slim intervenes and supports Carlson's view. Candy has know become hopeless due to the power of Slim. Tension is rapidly increasing. The third phase the tension is reduced. Whit talks to Slim about Bill Tenner,
