In this book a sixteen-year-old girl keeps her diary after a nuclear explosion has devastated the country. The following essay will present to you the current social problems and the effects of isolation... caused by nuclear war. It will also reveal how Ann's-the main character-character changes throughout the novel. When we first meet Ann, she is alone and scared after losing her family in the nuclear war and subsequent fall out. This is shown in the line: "I am afraid Someone is coming." This line shows Ann's fear because she has been alone for one year and now in the distance, she has spotted a lone figure approaching
