Daniel Randolph In the dark novel of A Clockwork Orange, Anthony Burgess presents us with Alex an unusually jaded fifteen year old, a questioning villain like hero. He describes himself as "your humble narrator." Throughout the work, Alex personality, ethics and the society around him were the primary driving force of the work. Burgess' motives beliefs and fears were actively portrayed in one of the most disturbing books of the twentieth century. The anti-utopian world that produced Alex serves the reader with a provoking view of a democratic society on the verge of totalitarianism. Alex is never a truly likeable character as he tells his bleak story through his near evil perception of the world around him.
