What our users think of the Modern essays in this section:
"This monologue is nicely written, and the feelings and emotions of Neville are made very clear. The Bob Marley song is beautifully embedded into the writing, and it is very effective throughout. The language is quite sophisticated, and there is a very strong connection with the film. The tone of the monologue is not always consistant - sometimes Neville speaks very seriously, but that is interrupted by a small humorous line. Also, the style of writing gives me the impression that a story is just being told, I found it quite hard to really connect to this character. Overall, this piece of writing is very well done.

"Very bad essay, irrelevant and untrue introduction and very subjective, for example, thinking the priest has cancer "i believe",- he had a stroke."

"As I am familiar with the novel, I took a particular interest in this essay. The writer clearly has a thorough understanding of the text, being able to choose appropriate passages to highlight their points. The writer picks up on the seemingly contradictory views of women in the novel, in both their views of themselves and in how others view them. Stephen tries to maintain an act of indifference, in places mistrust, towards most of the women he comes into contact with. Despite his outward appearances, he retains a curiousity towards them which becomes insatiable. This interest feeds into Frayn's portrayal of women as apparently powerful figures, despite their physical weaknesses in an age when patriarchs dominated the home life. The writer shows awareness of the myriad of contradictions surrounding Stephen and his views towards the females in the novel with the references to the lamorna bush and its hold over Stephen's senses. "well structured essay, very useful."

"A well-written essay. Quotes from the text were used sparingly, but, from a personal view, I found this refreshing. More analysis and less focus on the language of the text is an approach I approve of, especially when the quotes are well-selected, as here. The group mentality aspect is picked up on when talking about the abuse suffered by individuals, and the writer shows awareness of the psychological effect that being part of a group can have on its members, giving them a 'courage' and viciousness that they would not otherwise possess. The question is addressed in detail, and the writer wanders little from this. TSR user: Edenr."
