In the sonnet 'One day I wrote her name upon the strand' Spenser presents the theme of mortality by referring to his own personal situation. The structure of the sonnet (three quatrains and a couplet) is effective as it gives flexibility and has enabled Spenser to tell a complex poetic 'story'.
